Nepal meets Maldives in Nehru Cup opener

KATHMANDU, Aug 6: Nepal will open its Nehru Cup campaign against South Asian rival Maldives on August 23 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, India. The tournament is scheduled to be held from August 22 to September 2.



According to reports by Indian news agencies, Nepal will face Cameroon on August 26, host India on August 28 and Syria on August 30. The final will be held on September 2.[break]



Defending champion India will play against Syria in the tournament opener.



The five participating teams will play against each other in round robin format and the top two teams will advance into the final.



This is Nepal´s first participation in the Nehru Cup, an international football tournament conducted by the All India Football Federation.



According to Nepal´s coach Krishna Thapa, the final list of 20 players is likely to be finalized on Wednesday after conducting a test match at the Chyasal ground in Lalitpur on Tuesday. The All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) has currently called up 29 players for training. Hari Khadka and Upendra Man Singh are the assistant coaches of the Nepali team.
