SIRAHA, July 7: Normal life in Lahan remained crippled for the third consecutive day Saturday due to a banda or shutdown enforced by the Siraha Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The markets in the town are closed, owing to the shutdown. [break]

The Siraha Chamber has announced the Lahan banda since Thursday, protesting the ´police high-handedness´.

Accusing the local police administration of misbehaving with the proprietor of Hotel Bishal and guests as well, the Lahan business community is on a warpath putting forward a three-point demand.

The dispute arose after a police squad in plain clothes attempted to carry out a raid in the hotel on last Wednesday night.

The hotel management barred the police from carrying out the raid in the hotel.

Return of the property (gold ornaments and Rs. 500,000) ´looted´ by the police from the hotel and a high-level investigation into the incident are among the demands set forth by the Chamber.

The Chamber has warned of continuing the protest until and unless the demands were met.

Siraha police chief Rajeshlal Karn, however, denied the charges saying that police went to raid the hotel, following an information that criminals were residing there and claimed that hotel management first attacked the police personnel deputed for the raid.
