KAVREPALANCHOK, Jan 19: Former State Minister Govinda Nath Upreti passed away today. He died at the age of 82 at his residence in Bhumlu Rural Municipality–8 of Kavrepalanchok district.
Upreti, who had been suffering from respiratory-related illness for a long time, had been under the care of his nephew Bishnu Bahadur after the death of his wife during the Covid period. Ward Chair Motilal Tamang said Upreti passed away at 3 am today. Actively involved in the leftist movement for decades, he was known in the eastern region as the “Red Tiger.”

Upreti had served as a lawmaker before becoming State Minister for Labour. Elected as a lawmaker and later appointed State Minister for Labour, Upreti joined UML politics after the unification of CPN-ML. Following the party’s split, he moved to CPN- ML, later pursued an independent political path, and in recent years remained active in the then Maoist Centre as part of the leftist movement. He made significant contributions to the development of Kavrepalanchok district, particularly the eastern region.
According to Lama, a condolence programme will be held today, and following the arrival of relatives, his last rites will be performed this afternoon at Dolalghat.
