KATHMANDU, March 25: A merger between the Janamat Party and the Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) is set to take place before April 16.

Task forces formed by the parties are currently working on the merger process. The task force from Janamat Party is led by Abdul Khan, while the task force from the NUP is led by Ganga Ram Chaudhary.

The two task forces have already held a discussion on how to reach an agreement and move forward with the merger. On March 23, members of both task forces met to discuss the unification process.

During the discussion, both sides agreed to prepare separate documents for the party merger and then finalize them through mutual consultation to create a unified proposal.

Chaudhary, the coordinator of the task force from the NUP, said, “The documents are being prepared, and both sides are working on them. We will meet again in the next four days to finalize the proposal.”

Chaudhary stated that the task forces will primarily finalize the party's statute and organizational structure. “In addition to that, we will also make proposals on the election symbol and other internal party organizations, which will be discussed and finalized soon,” he said.

He added that they are proposing Ranjita Shrestha Chaudhary, the chairperson of the NUP, for the position of party chairperson. “The other side has suggested Dr CK Raut’s name as well, and we will have further discussions on this,” he said.

The task force formed by the Janamat Party has decided to propose the name of Dr CK Raut, the chairman of Janamat, for the position of chairman of the party after the merger. However the task force is positive about accepting the NUP’s election symbol, the "dhakiya," as their official symbol.

Dr Sharad Singh Yadav, a member of the task force and spokesperson for the Janamat Party, said that they will finalize the issues through mutual understanding. “We will resolve the issues through bilateral agreement,” he said.

Discussions are ongoing within both parties regarding the option of having Dr CK Raut as chairman, Ranjita Shrestha Chaudhary as vice chairperson, and Resham Chaudhary as party patron. Additionally, the initial proposal for the party's name is “Nagarik Janamat Party,” and the election symbol is the dhakiya.
