But it has been three months that the pile of garbage has been lying on the Ring Road with responsible authorities giving no hint when it would be cleared.
Although the stench emanating from the waste affects the locals of Mahalaxmisthan the most, it is equally annoying for the passersby.According to Nabin Ghimire, a local, the waste has been left unattended for almost three months with nobody doing anything to clear it.
"Living close to the heap of garbage is humanly impossible. I wonder why the authorities aren't doing anything about it," said Ghimire.
The worst part is that a private hospital operates near the site where the waste is disposed by the locals. Less than hundred meters away hordes of patients get treated at the hospital on a daily basis, risking their health.
"I have been complaining about it to concerned authorities but our concern has fallen on deaf ear," said Ghimire.
The case is no less different at Kalimati area where garbage has been piling up for weeks now. Located at the heart of Kalimati area, the scene of piled garbage has been a nuisance both for the residents and the pedestrians.
Environment Division Chief at Kathmandu Metropolitan Office, Rabin Man Shrestha, acknowledged the problem suffered by people due to amassing garbage.
"We have been trying hard to coordinate with the locals and clear the area as soon as possible. But this does not mean that the rest of the city is filled with dirt. Our manpower is working to dispose all the garbage and we have succeeded to a large extend," said Shrestha.
Meanwhile, Pradeep Amatya, Environment Division chief at Lagankhel Sub Metropolitan Office, said the problem would be resolved immediately.
"Garbage collection and disposal are handled by private sector firm. Our office deals only with disposing wastes from the core city areas," said Amatya.
