KATHMANDU, Nov 15: Flowers worth Rs 25 million were sold during the Tihar festival this year, according to the Floriculture Association Nepal.

The sale of flowers used to increase from 10 to 15 per cent every year during Tihar, but it was not so this year due to the border blockade and the Tarai shutdown, said Association vice president Dilip Bade.

According to him, altogether 700 thousand garlands of marigold, globe amaranth and chrysanthemum were sold and the highest number sold was that of marigold. Some 400 thousand garlands of marigold were sold.

Seventy-five percent of the flowers were sold in the three districts of the Kathmandu Valley while the rest were sold in other major cities like Pokhara, Butwal and Dharan.

The price of flower garlands has also increased this year compared to the previous year. A garland of marigold flower this year cost from Rs 35 to 65 while it was from Rs 25 to 50 last year. RSS
