POKHARA, Nov 4: Existing transport committees in Pokhara city have protested the setting up of a new transport committee. These committees had been acting for long as a transport cartel.

They have demanded that the Kaski District Administration Office (DAO) immediately scrap the registration and have threatened to shut down the district if the demand is not met. [break]

The new transportation committee named Bindhyabasini City Transportation Committee comprises businessmen from Pokhara Bus Entrepreneur Committee and Pokhara Taxi Entrepreneur Committee.

The existing transport committees said the new committee is unnecessary and it should be scrapped on environmental ground. The committees staged an hour-long transport strike in front of the DAO on Sunday.

The chief district officer, Basanta Raj Gautam, however said the registration was completely legal and cannot be scrapped.

The existing transport committees have been operating a total of 311 buses in 112 kilometer roads in Pokhara city.

Dev Prasad Gurung, chief of Pokhara Bus Entrepreneur Committee, said Pokhara city cannot sustain more vehicles so the new committee should be scrapped.
