Injured Tharu activist dies during treatment

KATHMANDU, June 6:  Dhana Bahadur Thanet Tharu, an injured Tharu activist who was undergoing treatment at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) in the capital, passed away on Tuesday night.



Tharu breathed his last prior to being taken to New Delhi for medical treatment. On Tuesday, the government had decided to send him to the Indian capital for further treatment.



Tharu was critically injured in police firing at Jhanda Bazzar of Nawalparasi district on May 9 during a protest program staged by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities ( NEFIN) and Joint Tharu Struggle Committee (JTSC).



Meanwhile, issuing a press statement, the NEFIN has demanded that the government immediately declare Tharu martyr and provide due compensation to the bereaved family.



The NEFIN has also demanded that the government bear economic and educational expenses of the deceased´s children.
