INARUWA, Oct 10: Sunsari district has become tense following the death of a detainee in police custody at the District Police Office (DPO). A large number of people, including the relatives of the deceased, gheraoed the DPO and attacked the police personnel, compelling them to fire a few tear gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
More than a dozen people, including police, have been injured in the clash. The protestors also vandalized a police van and blocked the east-west highway.
Hakiv Miya of Narasimha Rural Municipality-5, who was arrested a few days ago by the police on the charge of indecent behavior, ‘committed suicide’ by hanging himself inside the DPO.

Hakib, who had fled after falling in love with a girl of Inaruwa-9, Babiya, was arrested only a few days ago. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police, Narendra Kumar Karki, Miya committed suicide by hanging himself.
However, the family and relatives of Miya have accused the police of killing him. They have asked how Hakib was able to take a rope inside the police station when no one is allowed to take anything inside the cell.
Claiming that the police deliberately killed Hakib inside the custody room, they said they will not receive the body ‘until justice is done’.
However, chief of the District Police Office, Sunsari, Sanjay Singh Thapa said that it is not appropriate to attack the police as it is clearly seen on CCTV cameras that he had committed suicide. He said that they are investigating the incident.
