SPORTS BRIEFS: Adhikari, Pariyar qualify for Asiad tennis

KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Nepal´s tennins no. 1 Kumar Adhikari and no. 2 Jeetendra Pariyar on Thursday qualified for the 16th Asian Games (Asiad) to be held in Guangzhou, China. Adhikari remained undefeated in all nine matches held at the tennis court in Satdobato.



In the qualifiers held on Thursday, Adhikari won all three matches played and on Wednesday he clean swept six matches played among 10 players in the round robin format. [break]



Altogether 10 players, including six top rated players, contested in the final round of selection. Other four players were chosen from selection matches.



Similarly, Pariyar who was jointly in the second spot along with third seeded Shreeram Magar, secured the second spot to qualify for the Asiad.



Pariyar lost one among nine matches played. Pariyar on Wednesday had lost to top seeded Adhikari.



Altogether four tennis players including two male and female players each will contest in the Asiad scheduled to be held from November 12. Malika Rana and Aslesha Lissanevitch have been selected from the women´s section.







Rato Bangala, VS Niketan triumph



KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Baba, Rato Bangala, VS Niketan and Pathsala Nepal registered victories under boys´ category on Thursday in the Fifth Valley Public Inter-school Basketball Tournament.



Baba had a comfortable 32-2 victory over Bagmati, while Rato Bangala eased past Forward 16-8. VS Niketan beat Kathmandu English School 25-22 and Pathsala saw off Valley Public B 19-17.



In the girls´ category, Mahendra Bhawan, Daffodil and TIA emerged victorious. Mahendra Bhawan defeated Baba 27-13, Daffodil coasted Bagmati 29-11 and TIA thrashed Gyankunja 32-5.





KISC, Nirmal, Arniko win



KATHMANDU, Aug 26: Kathmandu Int´l Study Center (KISC), Nirmal, Arniko, Sambotta and Alpha´s won their respective matches under senior boys´ section on Thursday in the 10th Wilson Inter-school Basketball Tournament (Wilson Hoops).



KISC beat RIBS 45-31, Nirmal eased past Holy Vision 36-12, Arniko downed Young Heart 56-52 and Sambotta hammered Greenfield 64-15. In junior boys´ section, Young Hearts and Neric emerged victorious. Young Hearts thrashed Nalanda 28-5 and Neric outplayed Greenfield 39-15.



In girls´ section, The British School defeated Rupy´s Int´l 15-11 and in staff´s section Excelsior beat Lincoln 47-37.





ECS group supports MW Sports Award



KATHMANDU, Aug 26: ECS Group of Company has co-sponsored the Bajaj Pulsar Mid-west Sports Award. Managing Director of the group and Senior Vice President of Nepal Volleyball Association Gajendra Tamli handed over a purse of Rs 25,000 for the award function to be held in Nepalgunj on Monday.



The best male, female, youth players and coach of the Mid-western region will be rewarded on the occasion by adjudging their last year´s performance. Five players each will be nominated in each of these categories. Likewise, lifetime achievement and special award will also be given to one sports figure of the region.



Meanwhile, Tamli also provided a purse of Rs 5,000 for Hari Rokaya National Sports Journalists Award and also 50 music albums composed by him. The cash was handed over to TS Thakuri, the senior vice-president of Nepal Sports Journalists Forum, Banke Branch.
