Siraha prison in dire straits

By
LAHAN, Aug. 22: The Siraha District Prison in Lahan, the district headquarters, is in dire straits as the prison wall is on the verge of collapse, putting the lives of some 150 inmates at risk.

The wall is so derelict that there are fears it might collapse any time, posing threat to the inmates. The prison authorities are also concerned that the dilapidated wall might crash, providing escape route to the inmates. [break]

The prison house which was built during the Rana regime is hundreds of years old and its walls have developed cracks. But still no initiatives have been taken to repair the old building and its dilapidated walls.

Similarly, it is said the roof of the sentry post at the prison is shaky and might crash any moment.

Jailor Babita Mahato complained that the authorities concerned have been informed about the condition of the prison many times, but they have not paid attention.

There are 152 inmates including four women inmates in Siraha Prison.
