Singlehood is no barrier as Nepali women move on

As more Nepali women embrace singlehood—whether through choice, widowhood or separation—their growing financial independence and shifting social norms are reshaping traditional family structures. With nearly a million single women households in Nepal, the latest census highlights a significant rise in unmarried, divorced and widowed women. From career-driven individuals to women overcoming marital struggles, their stories reflect a broader societal transformation. As single women challenge outdated perceptions, experts stress the need for policies ensuring their empowerment, security and inclusion in decision-making processes.

With the rising number of single women in Nepal, a question arises: Is Nepali society embracing singlehood? A significant portion of single women are widows, and becoming a widow is never a matter of choice. Though the average age of marriage has increased in recent years, women in past decades married at a younger age. As a result, statistics reveal that many Nepali women lost their spouses and became widows by the age of 64.
