Sale of some cements banned temporarily

KATHMANDU, Sept 13: The government has put a temporary ban on sales of various brands of cement after laboratory tests showed these products did not meet their minimum standards set by the government.


Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) has temporarily banned OPC and PPC Super Advance and Infratech cement produced by Shree Araniko Cement Pvt Ltd, and Reliance Super Shakti and Reliance Cement produced by Reliance Cement Pvt Ltd.  Likewise, NBSM has put a ban on PPC Kalash Gold Cement produced by Shree Cement Pvt Ltd.

According to Bishwo Babu Pudasaini, the director general of NBSM, samples of these cements failed to meet the compressive strength level standards set by the government. 


In a similar manner, the government also banned PPC brand of Bajra Shakti, Tri Shakti Supper and JBC cement produced by Jaya Bageshwori Cements Pvt Ltd, and PPC brand of Yeti, Rock Strong and Gaurav Cement produced by Jay Mangalmaya Cements Pvt Ltd.


According to NBSM officials, these samples of PPC exceeded the 28-percent insoluble residue level set by the government. 


“We have temporarily banned the above-mentioned cement brands in the market,” Pudasaini told Republica Online, adding: “We have also directed producers to recall those brands from the market as soon as possible.” 


Pudasaini further said that clarification has been sought from the manufacturers of these brands.


“NBSM will decide later about lifting the ban after the clarification process,” he said. 


Pudasaini also said NBSM would carry intensive inspections in later days and urged traders, manufacturers and producers to maintain standards.
