KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Recent weeks have seen a surge in clashes among juveniles residing in correctional homes across various districts in Nepal, with the unfortunate consequence of two fatalities. These incidents have prompted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to initiate investigations and closely monitor the situation within juvenile correctional facilities.

Reports of vandalism and confrontations have surfaced from districts including Bhaktapur, Banke, and Parsa, prompting the NHRC to take immediate action. The NHRC has reached out to all provinces and provincial branch offices, urging them to expedite their investigations and submit detailed reports. Notably, a dedicated team from the NHRC's central office has been dispatched to conduct an on-site inquiry into the events at the Child Correction Home in Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-2, Bhaktapur, starting this Tuesday.

Similarly, the NHRC has disclosed that its team from the Lumbini Province Office in Nepalgunj is actively monitoring the situation at the juvenile correction home in Duduwa Rural Municipality, Banke.

Kamal Basnet, who was suffering from a general illness in Madhyapur, Bhaktapur, died on August 20 due to the lack of treatment. Protesting against Basnet's death, the children of the juvenile correctional home ran away from the correctional home by pelting stones and vandalizing it.

Similarly, Sulav KC of Rupandehi, who was seriously injured in a clash between two groups of juveniles  a few days ago, died during treatment at the Juvenile Correctional Home in Duduwa Rural Municipality of Banke. About 10 people were injured in the clash that took place earlier. There are also problems in the juvenile correctional home in Parsa, Kaski.
