Nepal urges China to help reopen Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border crossing

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal has urged Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming to support the reconstruction of flood-damaged infrastructure in Rasuwa and the reopening of the Rasuwagadhi-Kerung border crossing.

During a courtesy meeting at Singha Durbar on Friday, Minister Lamsal requested Chinese support for restoring infrastructure damaged by the Bhotekoshi flood and resuming operations at the major border crossing.

Lamsal said around 600,000 Nepali citizens need reliable access to the state and safe and convenient movement. He also called for coordination from the Chinese government to ensure the effective operation of the Korala and Tatopani border crossings.

“The Rasuwagadhi border crossing, one of Nepal’s major trade routes, has been closed due to the Bhotekoshi flood,” Lamsal said. “The government is working around the clock to arrange a temporary road and transport route along the existing alignment to provide immediate relief to local residents.”

He also requested Chinese assistance to bring the Syabrubesi-Rasuwagadhi road section back into operation at the earliest.

Lamsal said the government has begun preparing a new detailed project report (DPR) for the long-term development of the Kathmandu-Rasuwagadhi-Kerung road corridor and plans to open new tracks at necessary locations. He sought Chinese cooperation and coordination for the project.

Ambassador Zhang said China, as a close friend and neighbour of Nepal, was ready to provide all possible assistance. He said a special study should be conducted to rebuild and operate the Rasuwagadhi border crossing and develop durable and effective infrastructure, given its importance as a major trade hub.

According to Lamsal’s secretariat, Ambassador Zhang said China was positive about keeping the Korala and Tatopani crossings operational. He also said China would coordinate and facilitate necessary support for the reconstruction and reopening of Rasuwagadhi if the Nepali government submits a specific proposal.
