POKHARA, April 7: The Nepali Congress (NC) is preparing to challenge the appointment of Khagraj Adhikari as the chief minister (CM) of Gandaki Province at the Supreme Court (SC).
Bindu Kumar Thapa, the NC parliamentary party leader in the province, said that they have raised concerns with the Gandaki Province Chief Dilli Raj Bhatta regarding the appointment of the Chief Minister Adhikari.
Thapa said, “We have expressed our concerns to the province head regarding the appointment of the chief minister. We are currently engaged in discussions.”
Earlier, Adhikari, the leader of the Gandaki Province UML parliamentary party, submitted his claim to the position of CM. Adhikari has also received the support of Krishna Dhital, who became the Speaker from the CPN (Maoist Center).
The NC is preparing to approach the SC arguing that assuming the role of Chief Minister with the backing of the Speaker Dhital is unconstitutional.
Province Chief Bhatta appointed Adhikari as the chief minister with the support of two parties in accordance with Article 168 (2) of the Constitution on Sunday.
The support of 31 members of the provincial assembly - 22 from the CPN-UML, 8 from the Maoist Center and one independent provincial member - was submitted to the province chief to make Adhikari the chief minister.
