More than 650,000 Nepalis took labor permit in the first 10 months of current FY 2022/23

KATHMANDU, June 4: Over 650,000 Nepalis have taken work permits in the 10 months of the current Fiscal Year (FY). 

Since Shrawan 2079 BS (mid-July to mid-August), a total of 597,674 men and 59,269 women have received work permits, according to the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE).

The number of people going to work abroad, which slowed down after the start of the pandemic, has again set a new record this fiscal year. Due to the increase in the demand for labor from abroad, the number of people going to work abroad reached more than 70,000 in a few months of this year.

In the month of Baisakh (mid-April to mid-May), 54,457 youths have taken work permits to go abroad. Out of which 4,948 were women and 49,509 were men. In the Chaitra (mid-March to mid-April) alone, 61,478 Nepalis went abroad with approval for labor.

Nepalis used to get 2,500 labor approvals in one day to go abroad, but recently this number has decreased.

In Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August) 63,039 got labor permits while 76,403 got it in Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September). Similarly, 62,039 got labor permits in Asoj (mid-September to mid-October), 78,370 in Kartik (mid-October to mid-November), 68,564 in Mangsir (mid-November to mid-December), 65,464 in Poush (mid-December to mid-January), 64,284 in Magh (mid-January to mid-February) and 61,845 in Falgun (mid-February and mid-March). This is the number of new labor permits and re-employment permits.

For the foreign employment, labor permits have been taken mostly for Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). According to the department's data, 14,637 people have taken work permits for Malaysia in the month of Baisakh. Recently, the number of Nepalis going for foreign employment has started to increase from the Gulf countries to Malaysia.

Recently, the number of young people going there has decreased. In Baisakh, 10,230 people have received work permits for Qatar. Similarly, only 9,483 people have gone to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). 8,681 people have reached Saudi Arabia.

Similarly, in one month, 2,574 people have received approval to go to Korea and 2,110 people have received approval for Kuwait. 1,606 in Romania, 817 in Japan, 515 in Bahrain, 635 in Poland, 460 in Cyprus, 350 in Oman and 323 in Macau.

Along with the number of people going to work abroad, there has also been an improvement in the remittance flow. According to Nepal Rastra Bank, remittances of 933.9 billion rupees have been received in the nine months of the current year.
