KATHMANDU, Oct 15: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has emphasized the need to reform the existing system of appointing university chancellors.

Taking to social media on Wednesday, he wrote, “Instead of the current system where the Prime Minister serves as the Chancellor, capable and impartial individuals should be selected for the position. This is the suggestion I received from professors.”

Pun also said that the quality of education cannot be improved unless political interference in academic institutions comes to an end. He alleged that party influence and a lack of transparency in university appointments have deteriorated the academic environment.

“Without ending the politicization of universities, a healthy teaching-learning environment cannot be created,” he added. “Students cannot achieve quality education under such circumstances.”
