KATHMANDU, Dec 23: Leaders of the Dahal-Nepal faction of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) have reached the Election Commission demanding that they hold a two-thirds majority in the party and therefore they must be granted official recognition by the election body.

Leela Mani Pokharel, a standing committee member of the party, said that they are currently at the EC office, Kantipath, to claim that their faction has a majority with official signatures of 315 central committee members of the party.

"We are here with the proof that we are the only legitimate Nepal Communist Party," Pokharel said.

The Dahal-Nepal faction has argued that out of the existing 441 central committee members of the total 446, it has 315 members, meaning they have a two-thirds majority.

The leader claimed that the party registration process will begin soon.

To get official recognition from the EC, the faction should have majority members, full details and their signatures along with copies of citizenships.

After verifying the legitimacy, the EC grants official recognition to the rival faction with an election symbol and the same name which was previously used by the party.

The development comes a day after a meeting of the NCP's central committee members close to the Dahal-Nepal faction decided to expel chairman KP Sharma Oli from the post of party chairman.

Ahead of their formal split in the ruling party, the rival faction took disciplinary action against chairperson Oli for dissolving the House of Representatives (HoR) unconstitutionally. Likewise, the Oli-led faction through its central committee meeting announced an 1199-member general convention organizing committee while expelling Narayan Kaji Shrestha as the party's spokesperson on Tuesday.
