KATHMANDU, June 13: The Judicial Council meeting on Tuesday decided to maintain the record of date of birth of the Acting Chief Justice Gopal Parajuli as per his latest copy of citizenship certificate. The council took the decision citing the recent Supreme Court verdict on a writ petition of High Court Judge Surendrabeer Singh Basnyat.

Acting Chief Justice Parajuli and retired Chief Justice Sushila Karki were at loggerheads as Parajuli wanted to change his date of birth as per his latest copy of citizenship certificate, which would allow him serve an eleven-month long tenure as chief justice. Karki, then, had decided that Parajuli’s age should be ascertained as per his previous documents and records at the council. If Karki's decision was upheld by the Judicial Council, Parajuli, who is likely to be recommended by the Constitutional Council for the position of chief justice, would have a very short tenure of almost two months only.
Meanwhile, the council also decided to send a roster of six justices, who are eligible for the position of chief justice, to the Constitutional Council. The roster includes names of Justices Gopal Parajuli, Deepak Raj Joshi, Om Prakash Mishra, Devendra Gopal Shrestha, Cholendra SJB Rana, Jagadish Sharma Paudel.
