BIRATNAGAR, Oct 11: Personnel of the Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB), the Indian border security force, deployed at the Biratnagar-Jogbani border thrashed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pradip Giri on Sunday after taking him under their control from Nepali territory and hauling hin over to the Indian side.

DSP Pramod Kharel, spokesperson of District Police Office (DPO) Morang, informed that ASI Giri had been taken to the Indian side after Nepal police clashed with cadres of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) at the border."The SSB also confiscated a Chinese pistol from ASI Giri," said DSP Kharel.

As per the DPO Morang, around 300 protesters led by Raj Kumar Yadav, district chair of the Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, had attacked the policemen at around 2 p.m. The protesters pelted stones at the security personnel and also attacked them with acid bottles.

Three policemen, including police inspector Binod Shrestha of Nepal Police and two Armed Police Force (APF) personnel, sustained minor injuries in the clash, DSP Kharel informed.

"The clashes between Nepali security personnel and the protesters can be termed a general phenomenon, but Nepali security personnel being beaten up by the SSB is a matter of serious concern," said DSP Kharel, who also informed that Nepali security personnel had immediately rescued ASI Giri from Indian territory.

As per the DPO, the injured Giri has been undergoing treatment at Biratnagar-based Koshi Zonal Hospital.

Meanwhile, a team of Nepali officials including the Chief District Officer (CDO) and SP Tarani Prasad Lamsal had visited the Indian side to meet with Indian authorities and learn more about the incident.

It is learnt that UDMF leaders and cadres had been staging a sit-in protest at the Jogbani border area. Nepali security personnel have clashed with the agitating cadres time and again.
