Govt urges India to open gates of Koshi, Laxmanpur barrages

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: The government has urged the Indian government to open all gates of Sapktakoshi and Laxmanpur barrages as water levels in the two major rivers crossed the mark of danger due to heavy rainfall since Friday.

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: The government has urged the Indian government to open all gates of Sapktakoshi and Laxmanpur barrages as water levels in the two major rivers crossed the mark of danger due to heavy rainfall since Friday.


Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Krishna Bahadur Mahara called Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Manjeev Singh Puri on Saturday and urged him to take initiatives to open all the channels of the barrages, according to Mahara's secretary Yubaraj Chaulagain.

Ambassador Puri, in response, said that India is ready to open the gates of both the barrages and that he will take necessary initiatives to avert further crisis, Chaulagain told Republica.


Meanwhile, Mahara tweeted later in the evening, "Requested Govt.of India through the Ambassador in Kathmandu to open all gates of dams to prevent further damage by inundation in Terai."


Earlier, Home Minister Janardan Sharma had asked the foreign ministry to immediately take diplomatic initiatives with India to tackle the flood menace in the areas.
