KATHMANDU, August 6: The water level in Koshi River has gone above the danger level in Baraha Chhetra area in Sunsari. It is said that the water will reach Koshi Barrage in about two hours.

It is estimated that even if all the gates of Koshi barrage are opened, the water pressure would be huge in the barrage. The situation in the area is said to be critical. At present, 29 gates of the barrage have been opened.

The Koshi barrage can handle the flow of 900,000 cusecs of water. However, due to the accumulation of sand on the surface of the river, the flow of more than 400,000 cusecs is considered potentially risky, according to technicians.

It is estimated that the water seen in the Barah area will be around 500,000 cusecs when it reaches the Koshi barrage. As the sand that occupies a space equivalent to 300,000 cusecs of water is already piled up in the barrage, there is an increased concern that the water will usher the barrage itself.

The reason for increasing flow of water in the rivers connecting to Saptakoshi is due to heavy rainfall in several hilly districts. At present, the structure of Koshi river including Koshi barrage is being monitored by the authorities concerned.
