KATHMANDU, Sept 16: In response to the country’s challenging fiscal situation, the government has decided to cut meeting allowances for civil servants and reduce staff positions by up to 20%. The decision was taken at a secretary-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Eknarayan Aryal.
According to sources, all national-level workshops, seminars, trainings and interaction programs will now be held in government venues to promote cost efficiency. Projects that have not created financial obligations in the current Fiscal Year (FY) will be suspended, with allocated funds redirected toward repairing damaged structures, purchasing machinery and maintaining essential equipment.

During the recent protests, furniture and other office items were damaged. The government has instructed that locally produced goods be prioritised in replacement procurement. Chief Secretary Aryal has also directed the immediate review and amendment of rules, procedures and guidelines that hinder efficient, cost-effective, and responsive public service, in line with the expectations of the younger generation.
Vacant staff positions in offices providing direct services to citizens will be filled immediately upon request to the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration. Ahead of the festive season, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies will ensure smooth supply of essential goods, prevent black marketing and monitor markets, while the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport will manage public transport to facilitate travel.
Unnecessary government structures and agencies will be abolished, merged or transferred, with the Secretary for Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration coordinating with relevant ministries to implement the process. A task force will also be formed to streamline operations across ministries and security agencies and manage official vehicles efficiently.
In addition, ministries in Singha Durbar have been instructed to cancel previously issued unnecessary entry passes. Performance evaluation forms destroyed during office arson will be reissued and the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration will oversee the process in accordance with civil service regulations.
The government has also appealed to the public to return items stolen or looted from government offices, institutions, and private properties during the protests to the nearest police stations or relevant agencies.
