KATHMANDU, March 16: The Federation of Nepalese National Entrepreneurs (FNNTE) has demanded that the government immediately adjust public transport fares following a sharp increase in petroleum prices.

The FNNTE issued a statement expressing serious concern after Nepal Oil Corporation raised fuel prices effective Sunday night. Diesel prices were increased by Rs 10 per litre and petrol by Rs 15 per litre.

Federation General Secretary Daknath Gautam said public transport is fully dependent on fuel, and any fluctuation in fuel prices directly affects the transport business as well as passengers.

The FNNTE also expressed dissatisfaction that fares have not been revised since March 6, 2022, despite a provision for automatic adjustment through the Department of Transport Management Nepal.

According to the FNNTE, transport fares should be revised immediately based on the scientific system introduced in 2065 BS, which considers 13 indicators related to vehicle operation costs.

It urged the Department of Transport Management to adjust fares for federal routes and called on the respective ministries in all seven provinces to revise fares for provincial routes.

Transport operators also said raising prices alone would not resolve issues faced by Nepal Oil Corporation. They urged the government to control internal leakages within the corporation, manage petroleum consumption, and adopt a scientific system to ensure a smooth fuel supply.
