KATHMANDU, March 9: Former King Gyanendra Shah went towards Nirmal Niwas directly from the airport, accompanied by a rally of supporters. As soon as he arrived in Kathmandu from Pokhara, thousands of supporters gathered outside the airport to welcome him.

Shah, who arrived via a chartered flight, received a warm welcome from royalist groups with flags and banners right from the airport gate.

During the rally, the former king stood in the vehicle, waving his hand to acknowledge and express his happiness at the cheers of his supporters. He then proceeded towards Nirmal Niwas with them.

As former King Gyanendra Shah returned from Pokhara, an unusual scene unfolded at Kathmandu Airport.

Royalist supporters marched to the airport on Sunday under the banner of monarchy and nationalism and carried a photo of Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, India, and a BJP leader.

The text below Adityanath's photo reads, "Let’s reinstate the monarchy." Social media has experienced a deluge of reactions, questioning the irony of running a nationalist campaign in Nepal while displaying a photo of an Indian leader.

The campaign banner to reinstate the king includes the name of Hindu nationalist Pradeep Bikram Rana. Gyanendra met Adityanath in Lucknow some time ago.
