Chhurim to take Hughes' belongings to Everest summit

KATHMANDU, April 13: Guinness Book of World Record holder climber Chhurim Sherpa is set to take Australian cricketer Phillip Joel Hughes' bat and jersey to the Everest. A cricket kit containing Hughes' belongings will be taken to the Everest summit as part of tributes to the Australian who died late last year after being struck by a bouncer during domestic cricket match in Australia.

Amidst a function in the capital organized by Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) on Sunday, Wally Edwards, the chairman of Cricket Australia, handed over Hughes' belongings to Sherpa.


Sherpa, who holds of the record of climbing Everest twice in a week successfully, said, "I feel proud to carry the belongings of Hughes and believe that I will be successful in conquering the summit."

As per the plan, Sherpa will start her journey on April 15 and return to Kathmandu on May 31. However, the schedule is subject to change depending upon the weather of the Everest region.

Meanwhile, CAN Acting President Deepak Koirala said that the initiative will also bring global fame to Nepal. "I am confident that the expedition will be successful. The step shall boost global fame of the country," he said.

Chief of Cricket Australia Edward hailed the concept of organizing a Tribute match and taking Hughes' belongings to the top of the world as noble idea. " None other than Nepal could make such an offer of organizing the tribute match and taking Hughes' belonging to Everest. It was too generous," said Edwards, who also read out the letter sent by Hughes' family for the event.

He also handed over Cricket Australia's cap to Sherpa, who will also take the flag of Basant Chaudhary Foundation to the Everest.

Similarly, International Cricket Council (ICC) Global Development Manager Tim Anderson praised the initiative. "This is special tribute and an exciting opportunity provided by Nepal." Anderson also vowed that ICC will bring international players to Nepal from next occasions.
