KATHMANDU, May 24: Broader Madhesi Front (BMF), an alliance of cross-party Madhesi lawmakers, has taken strong exception to the government decision that seeks to extend the Constituent Assembly (CA) term by three more months.

“The government decision on CA term extension is not acceptable to us,” said senior leader of ruling Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D) Sharat Singh Bhandari, addressing a press conference organized by BMF in Singha Durbar on Thursday. [break]

Chairman of MPRF Upendra Yadav stated that his party was against the government´s bid to extend the CA term because they believed that the first draft of the new constitution could be drafted in the remaining next three days.

“There is still time to prepare the first draft of the new constitution, but the three major parties and ministers of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have decided to extend the CA term. We reject and condemn their decision,” Yadav added. He termed the government´s bid to extend the CA term as a conspiracy to the push the country towards uncertainty.

The leaders associated with the Madhesi alliance said that they would continue their protests across the Tarai districts. “The recent development has added meaning to our movement,” said Yadav, adding, “We will take forward our protests in more organized and peaceful way.”

Speaking at the same function, Chairman of Sadbhawana Party Sarita Giri accused that security agencies were trying to suppress their protests.

The Madhesi alliance has announced to organize a rally in the capital on Friday.
