Chaudhary, who set a new national record in women´s 100 m hurdles during the heat on Monday, was disqualified in the final because of a false start. However, she got over it and set another national record in women´s 400 m hurdles.[break]
Chaudhary of Armed police Force clocked 1 minute 8.80 seconds to complete the 400 m hurdles to clinch gold and set a new national record. Earlier, Kamala Prasain had set a national record of 1 minute 9.6 seconds in the event in 1990 and Chaudhary had equaled the record earlier this year.
Manamati Bista of Nepal Police Club finished second with a timing of 1 minute 10 seconds while Dil Maya Karki of APF claimed bronze clocking 1:11:6 minute.
"I was upset when I had a false start in the 100 m hurdles but the record that I set in 400 m consoled me," said Chaudhary.
Chaudhary had clocked 17.50 seconds in the 100 m hurdles on Monday to break the previous national record of 17.95 seconds set by Maya Thapa in 1997. According to IAAF rules, athletes are disqualified from a race after a single false start.
"The 100 m hurdles is my own event and I was expecting to set yet another national record but I don´t know how I made a false start," said Chaudhary.
Arati Pathak of Nepal Police won gold in the women´s 100 m hurdles clocking 18.1 seconds. Santu Chaudhary of Nepal Police clocked 19.1 seconds and Sunita Tamang of APF clocked 19.6 seconds to claim silver and bronze respectively.
Tekendra Raj Pathak won the first athletics gold for host Far-western Region in men´s shot-put as he threw 12.63 m. "I´m happy to win the first medal for the region. I hope my students will learn to love sports from me," said Pathak, a 44-year-old teacher of Puna Higher Secondary School, Mahendranagar. Narendra Jung Shah of NPC and Govinda Bista of Mid-western Region claimed silver and bronze medals respectively.
Anju Chaudhary of Western Region covered 9.70 m to win gold in women´s shot-put while Anita Mahato of APF and Basanti Chaudhary of NPC took silver and bronze respectively.
Pramila Rijal of APF finished on top of the victory stand in women´s 100 m sprint as she clocked 13 seconds. Sabitri Nepali of NPC clocked 13.30 seconds and Mira Khadka of Central Region clocked 13.70 seconds to claim silver and bronze medals respectively.
Likewise, Tilak Ram Tharu of NPC clocked 11 seconds to win the men´s 100 m sprint. Yam Sajan Sunuwar of Mid-western clocked 11.20 seconds to finish second while Bali Ram Chaudhary of APF claimed bronze.
Bishwa Rupa Budha of Mid-western Region clinched gold in women´s 10,000 m as she clocked 39:36.20 minutes. Bindra Shrestha Desar of APF finished second clocking 39 minutes 50.50 seconds.
However, Shakuntala Thagunna of Far-western Region and Nirmala Khatri of Western Region stole the show in women´s 10,000 m. Thagunna, a 13-year-old girl from Darchula, finished third clocking 43 minutes 32 seconds and 12-year-old Khatri from Baglung finished fifth clocking 44 minutes 22.1 seconds.
Photo finish in men´s 110 m hurdles
Dhirendra Chaudhary of Nepal Police Club clinched gold in the men´s 110 m hurdles in a photo finish. Santosh Shrestha of APF claimed the silver medal. Chaudhary clocked 15.8 seconds while Shrestha clocked 15.9 seconds as registered in hand timing. The jury looked at the video replay and announced Chaudhary as the winner later in the day.
Hemraj Parde of Mid-western and Khem Raj Chaudhary of Central Region claimed bronze medals after the jury could not decide the winner even after looking at the slow-motion replay.
