KATHMANDU, April 6: The Nepal Police will likely take action against over 80 officers who did not participate at a sacrificial rite in the recent Chaite Dashain festival, officials said.

The police headquarters wrote second time to the absentees on Tuesday, saying their first clarification was not satisfactory. "Second clarification in such a minor issue means that the department is bent on taking action. This is nothing but an ill-intention," said an officer, requesting anonymity. [break]

Police Spokesman Bigyan Raj Sharma said that seeking clarification was in itself the start of disciplinary action. He admitted that the headquarters was quite near to taking strong action against those "who defied departmental order".

Meanwhile, the police officers have termed it as the “violation of human rights”. “I mentioned in response to the first letter that I did not follow sacrificial rites as I favor non-violence. But that did not satisfy my bosses,” said an officer. “It was not something my duty requires me to do.”

Nepal Police organizes a sacrificial rite at its headquarters in Naxal during the Chaite Dashain festival every year and all officers present in the Valley are called to attend.
