Nations Gyan Chandra Acharya as Under Secretary General of the UN and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.A press statement issued by the spokesperson of UNSG on Wednesday confirmed Acharya´s appointment to post. He would replace Cheick Sidi Diarra of Mali.[break]
“He (Acharya) brings to the position 29 years of experience of diplomatic service involving the articulation and promotion of bilateral, regional and global issues. In the last several years, in various capacities, he has been consistently highlighting, advocating for and projecting the interests and concerns of the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states,” reads the statement adding, “With a focus on sensitising the international community about the challenges and opportunities in these countries, Mr. Acharya has contributed to mainstreaming the issues of countries in special situations in the global development agenda.”
Acharya is currently serving as a Member of the Bureau of Land Locked Developing Countries and Chair of the Commission on Social Development. From 2010-2011, he served as Chair of the Working Group on Lessons Learned of the Peacebuilding Commission.
He had also served as Foreign Secretary, Government of Nepal (2007-2009), Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN and World Trade Organization in Geneva (2003-2007), Spokesman of the Foreign Ministry (1999-2002) and Joint Secretary (Director-General) responsible for South Asia, Europe and the Americas and Regional Organizations, Economic Relations and Coordination Divisions (1998-2003).
Acharya, who born in 1960, graduated with a Master of Economics from Tribhuvan University.
Ban picked Acharya from among six candidates vying for the post. This is the highest UN position for any Nepalis.
