SPORTS BRIEFS: Hosts into quarterfinals

KATHMANDU, July 19: Hosts Bara and Rautahat secured quarterfinal berths in the Ncell National Women´s Football Championship on Thursday. Bara defeated Kanchanpur 2-0 while Rautahat recorded a comfortable 4-0 win over Taplejung.



In the match held at Simara, Bara scored both goals during the first half in its win over Kanchanpur. Sapana Basnet opened the scoring for the host in the 25th minute and Sapana Gole doubled the advantage in the 38th minute. [break]



Bara will meet either Nepal Police Club or Dhankuta in the quarterfinal on Monday.



In another match played at Chandranigahapur, Sapana Lama scored a brace in Rautahat´s comfortable win over Taplejung. However, the home team had to wait until the second half to break the deadlock. Renuka Nagarkoti opened the scoring six minutes into the second half. Sapana Lama doubled the tally in the 61st minute and made it 3-0 in the 71st minute. Roshani Rakhal sealed the victory in the 75th minute.



Kailali will play against Morang at Chandranigahapur while Police will lock horns with Dhankuta at Simara on Friday.



Open and age group swimming from Aug 8


KATHMANDU: Nepal Swimming Association (NSA) is organizing the 17th National Open and Age Group Swimming Championship from August 8. According to NSA Vice-president Mahesh Maharjan, they are organizing the event to select swimmers for the upcoming 12th South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in India.



Altogether 350 swimmers from 15 districts and 30 schools are expected to vie for 52 gold medals in the open and age group categories during the two-day championship. The expected cost of the event is Rs 606,500. Meanwhile, the organizers have formed a management committee headed by Maharjan and various other sub-committees for the tournament.



Open full contact karate on Saturday


KATHMANDU: Nationwide Men´s Open Full Contact Karate will be held on Saturday, the organizer Lainchaur Kyokushin Karate Do Association announced at a press conference in the capital on Thursday. The event will be held at the National Table Tennis Training Center, Lainchaur and will feature altogether 22 teams. Indra Lama is the defending champion. The winner will be awarded Rs 10,000. If Lama defends his title, he will win Rs 20,000 along with title of Fighter of the Year.



Bir Ganeshman basketball from Friday


KATHMANDU: The first edition of Bir Ganeshman Memorial Inter-college (+2) Basketball Tournament kicks off in the capital on Friday. The event organized by Nepal Students Union, Kathmandu Region No 4 will be held in league-cum-knockout format and will feature 24 teams, it was announced at a press conference held on Thursday. The participating teams have been divided into eight groups of three teams each and the group winners will secure quarterfinal berths. The winner and the runner-up will bag a purse of Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.



The most valuable player of the tournament will be awarded Rs 5,000. The group stage and quarterfinal matches will be held at the Golfutar basketball court while the semifinals and final will be conducted at the covered hall of National Sports Council. The expected cost of the 13-day event is Rs 600,000.



Cycling for social cause

KATHMANDU: Save the Children and Socialtours with Talent Inc announced on Thursday to co-organize Kathmandu Kora Cycling Challenge on Saturday. According to Media and Communication Director of Save the Children, Sudarshan Shrestha, the cycling event will be organized to raise awareness and funds for upgrading birth centers in Rukum district.



"Altogether 275 riders have already registered their names and currently we have already raised Rs 610,000," said Raj Gyawali, the founder director of Socialtours. The cycling challenge will start from Patan and pass through Kirtipur, Sitapaila, Balaju, Kapan, Bauddha, Koteshwar and Balkumari. Save the Children has taken the initiative for the event under its ´Everyone´ campaign, which has a slogan of ´No Child Born to Die´. "25,000 innocent deaths are unacceptable in this day and age. We not only want to make some noise about this injustice, we also want to raise funds and help directly," said Shrestha.
