SINDHUPALCHOWK, Dec 13: There has been a marked rise in cases of divorce in the district since the new civil code came into force four months ago.
Since August 17, the day a new set of laws replaces 165-year-old Muluki Ain, as many as 19 cases of divorce have been filed by men at the district court. Officials attribute change in laws and foreign employment for the rise in divorce cases. Under the new civil code, both men and women can seek divorce even without the consent of the spouse.
Foreign employment like elsewhere is huge attraction for youths in the district. Though the district has prospered over the decades, officials say that the foreign employment has wrecked havoc on social fabrics.
New law helping men file divorce cases
Civil and criminal codes are the first written laws that shift to uphold rule of law and basic civic decency by outlining a person’s rights and duties.
Just one month before the August 17, 15 women had filed cases seeking divorce in the court.
The new civil code has granted equal rights to both men and women. While under the old law, men could not divorce her wife without her consent.
