The KUKL has said the Valley residents face grim water scarcity in view of a huge decline in the production.
The KUKL, which is responsible to supply water to the households in the valley, has been supplying drinking water every five days to some parts and once in a week to other parts even during monsoon. [break]
An employee at KUKL said that people have to wait for more than a week during dry seasons as the production fall sharply and several sources dry up.
"We do not have any other option but to reschedule the previous routine," said Milan Kumar Shakya, spokesperson at KUKL. He said that the rescheduling is being done to provide whatever water is available to all the needy households.
The KUKL also said it has stopped distributing new taps until the next monsoon. "We are already struggling to maintain the supply," said Shakya adding, "We cannot provide water even if we distribute new taps. So we have decided not to distribute new taps for now." He said that the office has been receiving complaints about poor water supply every day.
The KUKL also said that it has stopped selling water through its tanker following the decline in production.
"At present we have been supplying water to the areas where water does not reach through the pipeline," he added. The KUKL said that water supply in the Sundarijal route would remain weak for some days as the office has drained the reservoir to clean it. The office said that it will take over two weeks to make the supply along the route regular.
Meanwhile, the Project Implementation Directorate, under KUKL Board of Directors, said that 1.7 million liters additional water per day has been added in the main water supply system. The Directorate said that five tube wells installed in Gongabu, Bode, Sanglakhola, Mahadevkhola and Mahankalchour Dovan have already started producing water.
According to Sanjeev Rana, spokesperson at the directorate, the five projects financed by the Asian Development Bank have already been completed. He said that other 15 projects of deep tube wells are under construction.
The KUKL said that demand for water in the capital stands at over 350 million liters a day, whereas production is less than 80 million liters.
