Gambirdhoj: An untiring coin collector

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Sixty five-year-old Gambirdhoj Joshi has been collecting coins on the ground floor of Laxmi Narayan Temple at Basantapur for more than 50 years.

KATHMANDU, Feb 8: Sixty five-year-old Gambirdhoj Joshi has been collecting coins on the ground floor of Laxmi Narayan Temple at Basantapur for more than 50 years.



Gambirdhoj's father established the coin shop years before the Nepal Bank Limited was established in 1994. The shop has coins from as old as 500 BC. Then, there also are coins from the Lichchhavi era. Joshi, who was always fascinated by coins, had always collected coins in his childhood. Later, it became a business.

Having had collected thousands of coin, Gambirdhoj said, "Earlier, coins had designs. However, now, coins are made just for monetary purpose. They don't value design."


Having spent his life collecting coins, Gambirdhoj isn't tired of his hobby and by preserving the coins, he is helping to save Nepal's history.
