290 penalized for drink driving on New Year's Eve

KATHMANDU, Jan 1; Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has penalized 290 drivers on the charge of drink driving on the New Year´s Eve on Monday.



The traffic police had called relatives of 140 drivers to drive them home whereas the vehicles of 153 persons were taken to traffic police headquarters. Similarly, five heavily drunk persons were detained overnight, according to the MTPD spokesman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pawan Giri.[break]



Similarly, police said fewer road accidents and injuries were reported during this New Year´s Eve compared to last year´s due to their campaign against drink driving. On December 31, 2011, one person was killed and 41 were injured in 25 accidents but on December 31, 2012, only 15 accidents occurred and seven people sustained minor injuries.



"There is no report of death or serious injuries on Monday and Tuesday," said Giri.



The MTPD had deployed more traffic police personnel on Monday night to control drink driving and similar numbers will be deployed on Tuesday as well, according to Giri. Traffic police personnel were positioned in crowded areas such as Thamel, Sorhakhutte, Durbarmarg, Putalisadak, New Road, New Baneshwar, Chabahil, and other places of the Capital for 21 hours, according to Giri.
