Two national records in SAG athletics selection

KATHMANDU, Dec 4: National Open Athletics Selection Tournament for the 12th South Asian Games on Friday witnessed two new national records with Chandra Kala Lamgade of Nepal Police Club setting record in women's shot put and Puspendra Kumar Goit of Dhanusa breaking the national record in men's long jump.

Chandra Kala, who set new national record on Thursday in the women's javelin throw, broke the record of shot put throwing 10.75 meter.Earlier, Manju Shrestha had thrown 10.69 meter in the section in March 1986 in Birgunj during National Athletics Tournament. Sita Shahi (9.6 meter) of Tribhuvan Army Club and Basanti Chaudhary (9.03 meter) of Police finished second and third, respectively, in the section.

In men's shot put, Rajendra Basnet (13.87 meter) of Army, Puskal Khadka (12.67 meter) of Police and Prem Hunching (11.36 meter) of APF claimed the top three positions, respectively.

Meanwhile, Puspendra broke 16-year-old national record in men's long jump as he jumped 7.09 meter. The record was under the name of Krishna Bahadur Giri who had jumped 7.00 meter in July 1999 during a selection game for the Eighth South Asian Games. Army men Chabilal Chaudhary (6.72 meter) and Dilli Khatri (6.72 meter) came second and third in the section.

In women's section of long jump, Krisna Chaudhary of Army came first as she jumped 5.26 meter, while Sila Chaudhary of APF finished second jumping 5.22 meter and Ramita Chaudhary of Army came third with 4.90 meter.

Likewise, Som Kumal of Army clocked 49.7 seconds to claim men's 400 meter sprint while Aashish Chaudhary finished second with the timing of 50.7 seconds. Himal KC of Army clocked 50.9 seconds to claim third position.

In women's section, Dil Maya Karki of APF clocked 58.8 seconds to win the sprint, while Manmati Bista of Police finished second with the timing of 59.5 seconds and Sabita Chaudhary of APF was third as she clocked 1 minute and 4.8 seconds.

Similarly, Army claimed all top three positions in men's 400 meter hurdle, with Ashok Kuwar finishing first with 57.5 seconds, Padam Karki second with 58.4 seconds, while Mahabir Bhujel claimed third position.

Meanwhile, Durga Devkota of Army claimed women's 1 minute and 13.2 seconds with no other contenders in the section.

Nepal Athletics Association is holding the event to select players for the SAG to be held in India on February 6-16 with 22 (11 men and 11 women) players to be selected for the closed camp.

On the last day of the selection on Saturday, events for men and women's 10,000 kilometer race, 1500 meter sprint, 200 meter sprint, discuss throw and triple jump will be held, according to the association.
