Jagadish Kori had thrashed his third wife Sanno Devi on Thursday evening. She was found dead on her bed Friday afternoon. Her body was covered with quilt with blood oozing out of her mouth and nose.[break]
“He hit me with a stick saying he will kill me when I went to save my daughter-in-law. He severely beat her up after returning home in an inebriated state,” Jagadish´s 71-year-old father Lala said. “I spent the night in the field to save my life,” he added.
Lala said he found his daughter-in-law´s body in the room Friday. “My daughter-in-law and I tried to convince him after knowing of his extra-marital affairs. He would have killed me as well if I had not fled,” he added. He said that his son always fought with his wife but behaved well with other women.
The victim´s mother Kailasha said that her daughter had repeatedly complained about Jagadish´s illicit affairs. “She would come crying to me and refuse to return home. I would somehow convince her saying the locals would make fun if she left her husband,” Kailasha added.
Jagadish´s first wife had opted for divorce 10 years ago. The second wife had committed suicide consuming poison due to his atrocities. He still has a six-year-old son from the second wife. He had married Sanno Devi from Ghumna across the border. “They had lied that the groom is a driver and a bachelor. We trusted and married off our daughter but he turned out a killer,” Kailasha rued.
“We had stopped paying attention to their quarrels as it had become a daily routine. It resulted in a murder as none of us intervened that day,” Shree Prasad Rajak, a neighbor, said. Police said the villagers have not been cooperative. “We have prepared a preliminary report saying the husband may have killed her as he has been absconding without reporting about his wife´s death,” Inspector with Banke Police Shiva Singh said.
