The remarks came amid strong demands by the Nepali Congress (NC) that it should lead the new government to hold the fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) election.[break]
The Maoist leaders have maintained that since President Ram Baran Yadav already represents NC, giving the NC the leadership of the new government could invite serious political imbalance.
This is the first time the Maoist have publicly made such claims after the four major political parties including Maoist, NC, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front decided to go for a CA election.
"There is no any ground for the NC to claim the leadership of a new government. A situation has emerged for our party to claim the leadership of the new government again," party spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said in a meeting with journalists at the party headquarters in Perisdanda on Saturday.
The latest Maoist stance comes a day after CPN-UML proposed NC lead a new government.
During a meeting of four major forces on Friday, UML had officially proposed NC be given the responsibility to lead the new government for holding the CA election mainly because NC had not headed any governments that were formed after the last CA elections in April 2008. Both the Maoist and the UML have led governments two times each since then.
Sapkota alleged that all ´status quo´ forces in the country wanted NC-led government, which according to him, will put all "progressive" agendas in a backburner. "Now, president is also from Nepali Congress.
The status quo forcers have been trying to form the NC-led to push all forward-looking agendas of Maoists into the backburner," Sapkota added.
