UNMIN chief Karin Landgren conveyed the UN´s readiness to hand over the equipment first on loan and afterwards as assistance to the government during her meeting with Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Rakam Chemjong on Monday, said a source who attended the meeting. [break]
Landgren further said that the government should initially request for the equipment and logistics on loan as it will take time for the UN to decide about providing them as assistance. The government wants the close circuit televisions, siren system and other logistics used by UNMIN monitors. The request was officially made to the UN during the visit of Under Secretary General for Political Affairs B Lynn Pascoe early this month.
According to the source present in the meeting, Landgren told Chemjong that the UN requires a unanimous request from parties to provide the equipment and logistics on loan.
According to Chemjong, the UNMIN chief had inquired about what would happen after the UN political mission leaves the country on January 15. Landgren was not available for her comments.
