Sports Briefs: National Park win in elephant polo

BARDIYA, Dec 1: The hosts National Park defeated Centuriers, Australia, 8-4 on the second day of the 28th International Elephant Polo being held at Bardiya National Park.

Tiger Tops Spice Girls, Singapore, edged past Angers Energy, Scotland, 8-3 and Tepa, Thailand, crushed Karnali Dolphin 8-3. Chivas Regal, Scotland, thrashed New York Blue Beach, US, 10-3. Similarly, Tiger Tops, Iceland, registered a narrow 4-3 victory over Frog Hunter, Australia.

YFSNC dissatisfied

Youth Force Sports National Committee (YFSNC) has expressed dissatisfaction at the formation and declaration of newly formed Nepal Confederation of Sports, a sports wing of CPN-UML.

Issuing a press statement of Tuesday, the YFSNC has said that the confederation has ignored the people working in sports sector and 75 percent of the people in the confederation were not related to sports.

The YFSNC has also demanded formation of the committee comprising of sports activists and coaches. The formation of the confederation was announced on Monday.

Rhedon College win inaugural match

Rhedon College won the inaugural match of the First Friendship Football Cup 2009 organized by Higher Secondary Schools´ Association of Nepal (HISSAN) on Tuesday.

Rhedon defeated Premier College 4-3 in a tie-breaker after the match ended in a 1-1 draw in the regular time. Premier´s Ronin Dangol scored the first goal in the 29th minute while Dhruva Shrestha of Rhedon scored an equalizer in the 80th minute.

In another match held at the Laborotary School, Kirtipur, White House ousted Canvass International. Binod Khatri scored in the 27th minute for White House and Binod Ghale of Canvass scored an equalizer two minutes later.

White House won the match 3-2 in penalty shoot-out. Meanwhile, Xavier International earned a walkover from VS Niketan.

School volleyball

Newton High School, Baluwatar, is organizing the second edition of Newton Inter-school Boys´ and Girls´ Volleyball Tournament from Friday.

The tournament to be held in the league-cum- knockout basis will feature 12 teams in boys´ and 10 in girls´ category. The expected cost of the four-day tournament is Rs 250,000.

Assam chess

Nepal failed to put up good show in the 3rd round of ongoing 3rd Jugal Kishor Newatia Memorial International Open Rating Chess tournament being held in Assam, India.

Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali (3 points), Prakash Nepal (2 points), Prem Krishna Maharjan (2 points), Rabindra Shakya (2 points), Pupchan Pradhan (2 points) and SP Shah (1 point) won their respective matches.

Nepali defeated IM Atanu Lahiri of India (rated 2394), Prakash downed fellow Nepali player Damodar Gaiju, Rabindra routed Sanjay Maharjan, Rupchan defeated a 1755 rated Sri Lankan player and SP Shah overpowered unrated Majokh Das of India.

Nepal´s top seeded Niraj Niraula, Bikram Priya and Bikash Kuluju played draws. Harichandra Chaulagain, Bishow Vijaya Ghimire, Suman Shrestha, Hera Kaji Maharjan, Raju Subedi, Damodar Gaiju, Sanjay Maharjan, Brindra Kumar Mahato, Sajin Maharjan, Brij Bihari Shah, Balram Pun, Devanshu Ghimire and Jeevan Mainali lost their matches.

Russian rescued after paragliding accident

A Russian tourist fell into the Phewa Lake while paragliding in Pokhara on Tuesday.

The tourist identified as Alan, 28, was rescued by the police after he fell off during landing near the lake an hour after starting the paragliding from Sarangkot at 1:15 pm.

"Tragedy was averted as a team from Ward Police Office, Baidam, rescued immediately after the accident," said spokesperson for Kaski Police inspector Bishwaraj Adhikari.
