Cops 'beat up' journalists

NEPALGUNJ, Sept 13: A police patrol allegedly thrashed three media persons who were returning from Panchakoshi FM at the district headquarters of Dailekh Monday night.



Local correspondent of Avenues Television Bhupendra Shahi, Annapurna Post correspondent and President of Dailekh Chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Pushkar Thapa and Himalayan Television correspondent Ratna Shahi were allegedly beaten up by police at around 9:30 pm near the District Administration Office. “They started to kick us and hit with sticks immediately after recognizing us saying we had become oversmart,” Bhupendra Shahi claimed. District Development Committee staffer Khagendra Thapa was also beaten up along with the three journalists.



Assistant Chief District Officer Mani Pokharel, however, claimed that the media persons were in fault and that the journalists had manhandled the police first and police had just retaliated.



Meanwhile, a report from Tanahun said, police beat up Dhorbarahi FM journalists Dipendra Nepali and Ram Sharan Nepali, who were returning to their quarters after ending the day´s broadcast.



Paudel said a drunken policeman Nakul Pariyar beat them up outside the Area Police Office, Belchautara. DSP Gautam Raj Kattel said action has been initiated against the errant policeman.
