Tharu people demand three-day holiday for Maghi

KANCHANPUR, Jan 13: Tharu people of Shuklaphanta Municipality have demanded a three-day public holiday on the occasion of the Maghi festival.


They have drawn the attention of the Mayor of Shuklaphanta Municipality regarding the public holiday. The officials working at Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) have demanded a public holiday from January 14 to January 16. “We met the mayor on Wednesday demanding a three-day public holiday on the occasion of Maghi and Tharu Sambat New Year 2645 and the mayor also has given positive feedback,” said Hawaldar Chaudhary, president of NEFIN.

Dil Bahadur Ayer, mayor of Shuklaphanta Municipality, has said that there will be discussion among executive members regarding the holiday on the occasion of Maghi and they will reach a conclusion soon.


A majority of the population in the municipality is Tharu and Maghi is one of the greatest festivals of theirs.
