Junior wushu team leaves for Singapore
A six-member wushu team including five players left for Singapore on Thursday to participate in the Second Junior World Wushu Championship scheduled to begin from Saturday in Singapore. Rinji Sherpa and Susmita Tamang will contest in the chan-chuan event of thaulo while Erica Lama will represent Nepal in tai-chi of thaulo in the championship. Meanwhile, Rupak Tamang will fight in boys´ 48 kg weight category of sansau event while Chahana Bamjan will participate in girls´ 60 kg of sansau. Workers Martyrs Memorial Club bade farewell to the team headed by Coach Yubaraj Gurung on Thursday.
Athletics teams off to India, Malaysia
A three-member athletics team, including two athleles left for Pune, India on Thursday to participate in the 12th Asian Marathon Championship. Man Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Army and Krishneshwari Sintakala of the Armed Police Force will contest in the men´s and women´s marathon on Sunday. Manohar Dahal will accompany them as their coach. National Sports Council Member-secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary bade farewell to the team on Thursday.
Meanwhile, a four-member Nepali team is set to leave Kathmandu on Friday to participate in the 16th Asian Masters Athletics Championships, an event for veteran athletes, scheduled for December 6 to 12 in Bukit Jalil Stadium, Malaysia. Ram Krishna Maharjan will contest in 1,500 and 5,000 m races while Purna Manandhar will compete in shot put. AIG of Nepal Police Kiran Kumar Gautam bade farewell to the team headed by Bhairab Shahi and managed by Deependra Kumar Goit amidst a function on Thursday.
Bodybuilder Shrestha honored
Nepal Body Building and Fitness Association (NBBFA) on Thursday honored bodybuilder Shyam Shrestha with a cash prize of Rs 10,000.
Shrestha had secured third position in men´s 65 kg category during the Second WBPF World Men´s Bodybuilding held in Banaras, India from October 27 to November 1. This is the greatest achievement for Nepali bodybuilding in international arena.
Shrestha had also won gold in the Seventh South Asian Bodybuilding Championship held in Kathmandu, and finished sixth in the 44th Asian Bodybuilding Championship held in Tehran, Iran.
NBBFA President Rajesh Babu Shrestha handed over the cash prize to Shrestha.
EFG, Sepoys set final clash
CHITWAN: EFG of Switzerland set up the final clash with Sepoys of UAE on Thursday winning their respective semifinal matches in the 29th International Elephant Polo being held at Meghauli in Chitwan.
EFG saw off Chivas Regal of Scotland 8-6 in the first semifinal while Sepoys dispatched Nepal´s National park 8-4. The final, third place match and Olympic Cup, the match to be held between teams that did not make it to knockout stage, will be held on Friday.
National TT kicks off in Biratnagar
BIRATNAGAR: Nepal Police Club, Kathmandu, Sunsari and Lalitpur have secured semifinal berths in men´s team event in the 33rd National Table Tennis Tournament that kicked off in Biratnagar, Morang on Thursday.
Police defeated Rupandehi 3-0 in straight sets, Sunsari saw off Bhaktapur 3-2, Kathmandu blanked Morang 3-0, and Lalitpur eased past Dhanusha 3-0.
The tournament has 250 players from 25 districts across the country competing in eight different categories.
Earlier, Minister for Local Development Purna Kumar Sherma inaugurated the event.
The tournament is organized by Morang Table Tennis Association and is being held in Biratnagar after 36 years. The city had earlier hosted the 12th National Table Tennis Tournament in 1974.
