SPORTS BRIEFS: Neric off to flying start

KATHMANDU, May 24: The host Neric made a flying start in the First Neric Cup Inter-school Boy´s Basketball Tournament that kicked off Tuesday as it won matches in both junior and senior category respectively.



Under the junior section, the host saw off Greenfield 38-23 riding on 16 points of Binod Bhandari. [break]



In the senior category, Neric registered a narrow 30-27 win over Angel Lord. Sagar Basnet netted the highest nine points for winning side. Altogether, 32 teams from 28 different schools, have participated in the event being held in the league cum knockout basis.



U-14 basketball team off to Japan


KATHMANDU: A-15 member Nepali U-14 Basketball Team including 12 boys players left for Tokyo, Japan to participate in the Cultural Sports Exchange and Basketball Development Program to be held there from May 25-31. Ajay Kunwar, Satendra Kumar Jaiswal, Anish Magar, Keshang Thokya Thakuri, Namkan Darjee, Kunkenjeet Thing Lama, Tshewang Ghirme Bista, Biplab Khadka, Saugat Singh Baniya, Sohan Tamang, Pradip Nepali and Kumar Magar are the players.



Nepal Basketball Association General Secretary Dinesh Thapa is the manager while Dinesh Nakarmi and Purna Neupane are the coaches of the squad. The team is scheduled to play five friendly matches with different U-14 teams in Tokyo including the champion of Tokyo High School in its last match.
