Simara defeated NIMS 3-2. Sapana Basnet scored twice for Simara and Sapana Gole added another. Sirjana Khadka and Bina Nakarmi netted one each for NIMS. [break]
In another match, Jana Jyoti hammered Arunima 8-0. Yashoda Lama and Rashmi Khatri scored a brace each for Jana Jyoti. Other goals came from Renuka Nagarkoti, Punam Lamichhane, Anchali Waiba and Sapana Lama.
Khatri stands first
KATHMANDU, July 31: Letter Singh Khatri of Army Club claimed first position during Saturday´s athletics selection of men´s marathon for the 16th Asian Games.
With the victory, Khatri has been selected in the first round. He completed the distance in 2 hours 4 minutes 16 seconds. Finishing behind the armyman was his club-mate Rajan Khatri who secured second position with a timing of 2 hours 5 minutes 29 seconds.
The 11th South Asian Games (SAG) marathon gold medalist Rajendra Bhandari, also of the Army Club, was given a direct entry in the first round. Bhandari had finished the marathon in 1 hour 59 minutes 47 seconds but it later emerged that the distance was short by five kilometers. His last marathon rehearsal timing was 2 hours 22 minutes 18 seconds.
Altogether 18 athletes had competed in the selection.
Karate selection begins
Selection of karate for the Asiad commenced at the main dojo hall of the Dasharath Stadium on Saturday after a brief hiatus earlier this week.
The first day of the selection saw the medalists of the Fifth National Games and the national team members selected in Hetauda compete for the Asiad. Sitorio karate also held its internal selection.
A total of 24 players, including all SAG medalists, will be selected in the first round. The players will be selected in four weight groups each in men´s and women´s categories during the first round that will conclude on Sunday. Only four men and four women players will participate in the Asiad after the final selection.
