SPORTS BRIEFS: NTA lifts Bista's suspension

KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) on Thursday lifted the suspension slapped on taekwondo ace Deepak Bista.



A press release issued by the NTA states that Bista´s two-month suspension from the central committee has already expired and the NTA did not find his activities questionable during the period. [break]The statement also praised Bista for contributing to the welfare of the NTA.



The central working committee of the NTA had taken disciplinary action against Bista on May 22 for attending a meeting as chef-de-mission for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in Singapore in August at the behest of the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC). The NTA accused Bista of attending the meeting without informing them at a time when they were engaged in a fervent dispute with the NOC regarding the participation of taekwondo players in the YOG.







APF dominate badminton


Sajan Krishna Tamrakar, Ratnajit Tamang and Dipesh Dhami of the Armed Police Force (APF) and Bilala Warsi of Banke on Thursday advanced into the semifinal of U-19 men´s singles in the 34th National Badminton Championship underway at the Dasharath Stadium covered hall.



Tamrakar had straight sets 21-14, 21-16 victory over Bhugol Gurung of Kaski and Tamang was declared winner after 21-10 first set win over Sudip Sedai of Kavre as Sedai quit the match due to injuries. Similarly, Dhami eased past Sanjeev Khadka of Kailali 21-8, 21-11. Warsi had a third set 17-21, 21-17, 21-15 victory over Mohammad Irfan Ansari of APF.

In u-15 boy´s singles, Dipesh Dhami and Suman Limbu of APF, Santosh Khadka of Sunsari and Rajesh Chand of Kanchanpur made it through to the semifinals winning their respective matches.



In the same category girls´ match, Shiksha Shrestha of Chitwan, Shreya Pradhan of Bhojpur, Swastika Budhatoki of Kaski and Rubina Thapa of Nepal Police Club (NPC) emerged victorious to book a place in the last four.



In women´s singles, top ranked Saradevi Tamang of Nepal Army (NA), Anita Ghimire of Kathmandu, Punam Gurung of Kaski, Nangsaldevi Tamang, Puja Shrestha, Shamjana Khaling, Sarita Tamang and Mina Shreshta of APF secured quarterfinal spot winning respective matches.



In men´s singles, Bikash Shrestha, Bivek Shrestha, Kishor Rana and Sahadev Khadka of NPC, Pankaj Chand, Sajan Krishan Tamrakar, Ratnajit Tamang and Indra Mahat of APF won their respective matches to find a place in the quarterfinal round.



In women´s doubles, Nangsaldevi Tamang and Puja Shrestha´s pair of APF, Purna Pun and Tulsi Gurung´s pair of Kaski, Saradevi Tamang and Sarswati Shrestha´s pair of NA, Sawswati Shakya and Sakuntala Nembang´s pair of Sunsari made it to the semifinals winning their respective matches.



In veteran´s doubles, Mohan Rai and Shiva Rai´s pair of Lalitpur, Hemanta Pal and Surendra Bahadru Singh´s pair of NPC, Manoj Shrestha and Dil Pun´s pair of Kaski and Chandrashekhar Lama and Gyan Bikram Shah´s pair of Kathmandu secured the last four spots winning respective matches.


Final round inter-school football from Sunday

The final round of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-School National Boys´ and Girls´ Football Tournament will be held in the capital from Sunday.



Altogether 12 teams in boys category and six teams in girls category are selected across the nation from regional qualifying matches. In total, 517 schools in boys section and 76 schools in girls section participated in the qualifiers.



Organizing a press conference at ANFA Complex, Satdobato on Thursday, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) General-secretary Dhirendra Pradhan said that matches under both the boys and girls sections will be held on league cum knockout basis.



ANFA will bear all costs including transportation and accommodation for 18 players and two officials of each selected team other than costs incurred in the capital during the eight-day final round of the tournament.



Boys teams are divided into four groups with three teams in each group. The winner of each group will make it to the semifinal rounds. All matches in boys category will be held at Dasharath Stadium.



Girls teams are divided into two groups of three teams each. The winners and runners-up of both groups will advance into the semifinal rounds. The league round matches will be held at Chyasal grounds while the knockout matches and third place match will be held at Dasharath.



The top four teams in both boys and girls categories will be awarded cash prizes of Rs 200,000, Rs 100,000, Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively. The best goalkeeper, defense, midfielder and forward will be awarded attractive prizes.



The expected expenses for the tournament organized as per the program of the Ministry for Youth and Sports are Rs 3.5 million.

Meanwhile, ANFA has announced it is to conduct a school-level football program in memory of the late Gyaljan Lama. Lama, an eighth grader at Mangaldeep School died on July 5 during an inter-school football qualifying match. “We will bring out a concrete program in memory of Lama,” said ANFA CEO Indraman Tuladhar during the press meet. He also informed that ANFA extended the Lama family cash help of Rs 66,000 for funeral expenses. “We also bought 25 paintings of Lama for Rs 125,000 (Rs 5,000 per painting).



Janajyoti beat Simara to qualify for final



Janajyoti Higher Secondary School, Rautahat, qualified for the final round of the Coca-Cola Cup Inter-school Girls´ National Football Tournament from the central region. Janajyoti eased past Simara Public School, Bara 2-0 on Thursday at Chyasal gropunds. Sapana Lama and Yasoda Lama scored a goal each for the winning side.

Cycle race on Aug 28

Kathmandu Bike Station (KBS) Pvt Ltd on Thursday decided to organize MTB Madness 2010 cycle race on August 28. KBS , organizing a press conference, informed that the five lap race would be conducted along 5.5 km long track at Budhanilakantha, Kathmandu. According to the KBS, winner of the race will get Rs 25,000 while first runner-up and second runner-up will receive Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively. The proceeds of the event will be donated to an NGO, Early Childhood Development Center, which is serving children of jailed parents.
