Smuggling of cell phones continues

CHAUTARA, March 22: Smuggling of mobile phones through Tatopani along the Nepal-China border has continuing unabated. On Tuesday and Wednesday, police confiscated cell phones worth Rs 315,000, while being ferried into the country illegally.



During inspections on Arniko Highway on Tuesday evening, armed police confiscated mobile phones worth Rs 73,500 while on Wednesday morning another 209 units of cell phones worth Rs 240,000 were seized from Lamo Sanghu check post. No one has claimed ownership of the phones and were over to Tatopani Customs Office. [break]



Nirmal Hari Adhikari, chief of Tatopani Customs Office, said the confiscated phones were of Nokia, Samsung and other brands.



Last December, Armed Police DSP Harka Raj Pant was arrested with 771 units of mobile phones worth Rs 1 million which were brought into the country via China by evading taxes. Since the arrest, armed police has steped up inspection along the highway linking Kathmandu and Tatopani.
