KATHMANDU, May 3: Nepali Congress Chair Gagan Thapa has warned that democracy itself could be put at risk if the main opposition fails to play an effective role in Parliament.

Speaking at an event in Kathmandu, he said the opposition carries responsibilities equal to those of the government, and any lapse on their part can shake the entire democratic system.

“We are currently the main opposition party in the federal Parliament. Just as the government has its responsibilities, the opposition has an equally important role. Even a slight failure on our part to perform that role properly can make democracy wobble,” Thapa said.

He noted that voters, through elections, have given the opposition a mandate to hold the government accountable and keep it in check.

Criticizing the government’s conduct and tendencies, Thapa pledged to firmly question any undemocratic actions. “We will support the government when it does the right things, but if its tendencies turn undemocratic, it is our duty to question and bring it back on track,” he added.

On good governance, Thapa made it clear that even a single rupee of irregularity by public officials is unacceptable. He said the party will adopt zero tolerance toward corruption by elected representatives, from local to federal levels.

He also informed that he will begin visits to all seven provinces starting next week, where discussions will focus on provincial and local government policies, budgets, and the country’s current economic challenges.

Thapa added that his main priority remains fostering broader unity and strengthening the party by bringing all sides together.
