Shamans land in police net for branding toddler

PANCHTHAR, Jan 21: Police have arrested two shamans on the charge of branding a 14-months old toddler with a heated spatula to ward off witchcraft on Thursday.

A team of police deployed after the incident came to the fore on Wednesday took shamans Suk Bahadur Rai and Til Bahadur Rai under control, said Inspector of District Police Office Panchthar Bijaya Shrestha.


A preparation is underway to bring the victimized toddler Dipsan Rai to the hospital for treatment, said a local.

Sick with diarrhea the child had been inhumanly branded with a heated spatula by sitting him on a heated stone by shamans to cure  him of illness in Oyam VDC-1 13 days ago.

Dipsan has sustained serious burn injuries to his left buttocks and his would is festering.

Shrestha said police are carrying out further investigation on the incident.
